European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
