Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
